India’s ration card system is an important part of food security, and is set to undergo a significant change in 2025. As millions continue to depend on subsidised food grains, the government’s recent changes plan to improve transparency, reduce abuse, and ensure the right people receive aid. These changes, along with e-KYC, dynamic pricing, and others, promise automation in the Public Distribution System (PDS). Mandatory e-KYC
With the introduction of e-KYC, the government aims to ensure all ration cardholders are genuine and there are no duplicates or fakes within the system. As of now, the deadline is set to April 30, 2025, after being extended from January and February. Cardholders must attend state PDS portals or fairs to finalise this stage. Authentication at fair price shops becomes faster and eliminates the need for paper. This shift aids monitoring and governance in real time while reducing errors. With the One Nation One Ration Card scheme, cardholders, even if migrants, can access benefits effortlessly.
Dynamic Pricing
Food grain prices are increased and decreased using a new dynamic pricing model, but subsidies are maintained for low-income groups. This helps keep equity for all income groups. For example, priority household consumers pay subsidised rates for wheat and rice, and other household consumers pay elevated but still affordable prices. The reform aims to secure food availability for all without overburdening the government while providing equal access.

Nutritional Focus
